Adelaide, South Australia's capital city, is renowned for its compact size and accessibility. Colonel William Light's vision in 1836 saw the city streets designed in a gridpattern surrounded by parklands. This safe and clean city is only one square mile, yet boasts many distinctive attractions. Within 20 minutes of the city center, you can be in the hills, by the ocean, or in the wine country. The airport is merely 3.75 miles from the city center, which takes approximately 10 minutes.
North Terrace is home to Adelaide's cultural precinct. The boulevard stretches for a half mile incorporating many major hotels, the Adelaide Casino, the Railway Station, Old Parliament House, the Convention Center and Adelaide Festival Center. A short stroll eastwards discovers the Migration Museum and the recently refurbished South Australian Museum, which houses the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery with over 3000 artifacts on display. Next door is the South Australian Art Gallery and two separate universities. The eastern end is home to the Botanical Gardens and next door the National Wine Center will be opened in 2001. The Center will offer wine tastings, classes, temporary exhibitions, and information on all wine regions in Australia. Parallel to North Terrace is Adelaide's central shopping district, Rundle Mall. Open to walking traffic only, this charming, open aired mall is home to an array of boutiques, department stores and souvenir shops. Also within a couple minutes walk in the East End, is Tandanya, an Aboriginal Cultural Institute that has didgeridoo demonstrations daily.
Adelaide has more restaurant places per capita than any other city in Australia. This is a perfect place to buy a picnic lunch to enjoy by the River Torrens (parallel to Nth Tce) or in the Botanical Gardens.
