Fremantle, Australia & New Zealand

Fremantle is located at the mouth of the River Swan on the east coast of Western Australia. Founded in 1829 when HMS Challenger, captained by Charles Fremantle, first dropped anchor here, the town first became an important whaling station. Fremantle is one of the oldest settlements in Australia and has a sense of history with many well-preserved examples of colonial architecture including the Maritime Museum (1852) and the Fremantle Museum and Arts Centre, built by convicts as a lunatic asylum in the 1860s.
